Discover the Beauty of Alamere Falls at Point Reyes National Seashore

If you’re craving an adventure that combines breathtaking coastal views with serene waterfalls, Point Reyes National Seashore is your go-to destination. This past weekend, I set out to explore one of its gems: Alamere Falls. Here’s everything you need to know for a memorable hike.

Why You Should Visit Alamere Falls

Alamere Falls is not just a waterfall—it’s a waterfall that cascades directly onto the beach. The hike to get there offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and diverse coastal flora. Plus, it’s an invigorating day trip that’s perfect for a weekend escape.

Before You Go: Important Tips

1. Check the Tide Charts

One of the most crucial tips: be mindful of the tide! The beach portion of the hike can become impassable during high tide.

2. Plan Your Essentials

Start your hike at the Palomarin Trailhead, where you’ll find convenient amenities like toilets and trash cans. Remember to bring your own water, as you will not find potable water until you reach Wild Cat Campground, about 5.5 miles in.

3. Dress for Success

The trail can be quite overgrown in parts. To avoid scratches, poison oak, and deer ticks, long pants are your best bet. Comfortable hiking shoes are also a must!

What to Expect Along the Trail

1. Scenic Views

From the trailhead, the hike offers magnificent ocean views and lush coastal vegetation. Each turn reveals new perspectives of the rugged landscape.

2. Bass Lake: A Refreshing Stop

About 3 miles in, you’ll encounter a spur trail leading to Bass Lake. It’s a perfect spot for a refreshing swim, with relatively warm and clean water.

3. Wild Cat Campground

The Wild Cat Campground is a key pit stop, offering another chance to refill your water supply and use the facilities.

4. The Final Stretch to the Falls

The last segment of the hike takes you down to the beach. This 1-mile stretch requires careful attention to the tide, so ensure you’re not caught off guard.

Enjoy and Recharge

Once you reach Alamere Falls, take a moment to relax and enjoy your lunch. The sight of the waterfall crashing onto the beach is the perfect reward for your effort.
